* Add `./tools/checkpatch.sh -c -u -m -g HEAD~...HEAD` example
  to match checks performed by our CI.
* Add cross-reference to checkpatch.sh documentation.

e3eeaefd6d style: Fix "the the" typo across the codebase. 
Fix 269 occurrences of duplicate "the" word typo found in 209 files
across source code, header files, and configuration.

edba1b5701 DOC: Fix documentation to include checkpatch.sh 
Unfortunately new contributors used to submit code with many coding
issues. And in fact it is our guilt: our codign style documentation
doesn't say to them how to use the checkpatch to find the issues.

Copyright notice and author contact/information should not be included
in file header anymore. Only standard Apache 2.0 licensing information
should be used.

c869bc5348 docs and comments: Update stale references to COPYING 
Since 7a046358d9 the top-level COPYING
file has been deleted and replaced by DISCLAIMER, LICENSE, and NOTICE
files. However, some references to the old COPYING file remained in
